Jimmy Buffett, Ernest Hemingway, and Harry S. Truman. In between the pastel colored conch-style homes and the aqua blue waters lies a plethora of things to do for fun outside of the tourist laden Duval Street. There's biking, walking, yoga on the beach, ghost tours, music, forts and historic monuments. Of course, KW is also world famous for its fishing, snorkeling and diving.
A favorite fun activity for all visitors from history buffs to fishermen alike is the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory. It is a peaceful respite from the busy streets of KW. A sanctuary of sorts, this exotic walk through nature is somewhat of a cross between a spa and a tropical rain forest. Home to approximately 60 butterfly varieties from around the world and 20 different bird species, this special venue ranks high on our list as a top place to play. As you walk among the flora and fauna, you feel transported to a dream-like setting as butterflies flit around you, birds roost in the trees and tiny quail dart among your feet. The sound of water falling adds yet another element of tranquility. As colors of orange, green, pink, blue, purple, red and yellow catch your eye at every angle, you are transformed by the beauty of it all. It is magical, educational, and very, very special. And guess what? Your ridiculously cheap $12 entry ticket (as of 2015) is good for as many consecutive turns through the gardens as you like within their hours of operation. We were completely dazzled by our first turn and therefore took another. The second was just as magical, if not more, as the first. For more information, visit http://www.keywestbutterfly.com.
